The Cottonwood Elementary Community Council has already been working to make this year another great school year. You are probably thinking, “What the heck is the Community Council?” Our goal is to ensure all parents feel informed about what is it that we do. Below is a list of facts that should help you understand the responsibilities of our school community council:
Facts:
*Community Council is a committee made up of Parents and Faculty to represent the needs of your students and classes.
*We develop a Reading Improvement Plan, School Improvement Plan, and Staff Development Plan every year.
* You can read a copy of these plans by coming to the school and asking Mr. Hughes for one, e-mailing the council chair (address list to the right) or by visiting https://www.schools.utah.gov/schoollandtrust/parents and looking up the info for our school.
A COPY OF THESE PLANS MAY ALSO BE ACCESSED BY CLICKING ON THE LINKS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THIS PAGE.
*In our meetings, we discuss ways that Utah Land Trust monies can be and are spent for Cottonwood Elementary.
*Land Trusts are designated areas in the state of Utah where profits are devoted to education throughout Utah.
*Our school received $26,271 last school year, and we were given $32,667 for the 2022-2023 school year!
*The majority of the money is spent on paraprofessionals who work to support students in the classroom. It is also used to keep online programs (such as LEXIA and Dream Box), and classroom journals giving students practice in writing and communication!
*We are not the same as PTO, although many of our members have helped with PTO in years past.
*If you have any questions or concerns, or just if you're just curious, anyone is welcome to attend our meetings!

All meetings will be held at Cottonwood Elementary OR Virtually over WebEx. Check the posted meeting notices for information on how to participate.
Any changes or additional meetings will be posted on the front door of the school for 7 days in advance of any meeting.
Please let any of the council members know if there is something we can do for our students to support their academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs here at Cottonwood Elementary.
Elected parents serve for a two-year term. You must have a child enrolled in the school for at least one of the two years of your term to be eligible to run.
We would like to invite parents to consider serving on the school community council. Voting is held every fall. You, as parents, can directly influence how the Lands Trust Funds are spent in our school.
